The Annual Threatened Species Bake Off is done and The Annual Threatened Species Bake Off is done and dusted for another year! 🍰 This year’s Bake Off theme is ‘towards zero extinctions’. With this in mind, our baking aimed to highlight the threatened species that are at greatest risk of extinction. These ranged from the Maugean Skate, with perhaps less than 1,500 left in their only known location of Macquarie Harbour due to intensive salmon industries, to the Cauliflower Soft Coral, and the Eltham Copper Butterfly with its idiosyncratic relationship with ants and plants. The winner was none other than an appropriately orange flavoured Orange-bellied Parrot cake, with accompanying flock of Orange-bellied Parrot cookies around their preferred tree hollow of Eucalyptus nitida. An incredible display by @jadesmith99, securing nearly full marks and this year’s title of Threatened Species Bakeoff Champ 2024!!! Special mention to @lukeyjeffery for most abstract, and notable mentions to - the beautifully patterned Maugean Skate of @maxdebeer, and suitably difficult to serve Kangaroo Island Echidna.
