Over 50 new hollows drilled by our climbing team i Over 50 new hollows drilled by our climbing team in just a few days. Considering it takes upwards of 100 years for tree hollows to form, this is a big boost for this patch of woodland. We love using the @hollowhog and teaming up with @wizarboriculture to create new habitat 🌳🌳

An exciting find from a recent project in the Snow An exciting find from a recent project in the Snowy Mountains. Lodge Environmental had been tasked with surveying a patch of subalpine woodland in the Yaouk Valley, with landholders keen to understand what threatened fauna may be present. A survey program was developed, including spotlighting, camera trapping, visual and bioacoustic survey.
Easily the most exciting find was a population of Yellow-bellied Glider which were detected via bioacoustic survey. This is a significant record for this species and fills a landscape-scale gap in their distribution – the nearest known population is >35km north, with very few recent (<20 years old) records in the surrounding region. Some Yellow-bellied Glider populations have faced steep declines in the aftermath of the 2019-2020 bushfires, so finding a population in an area of old growth forest that was not burnt is great news.
Other threatened species recorded during these surveys included Gang-gang Cockatoo, Broad-toothed Rat and Flame Robin. Our acoustic survey recorded close to 30 bird species!
Records such as this underpin the importance of using acoustic survey to detect vocal fauna. Some species can be easily overlooked during spotlighting or may only call for a short (often irregular) period each night. Recording complete soundscapes provides invaluable insights into biodiversity at a local scale and improves our understanding of species distribution.
This site will now be managed for conservation, with ongoing monitoring able to be rolled out to ensure the vegetation and threatened fauna that are on-site continue to thrive.
Got questions about bioacoustics? Get in touch! We’d love to help on your next project.

Last week, our Operations Manager, Tim Bennett, at Last week, our Operations Manager, Tim Bennett, attended the SXSW Tech & Innovation Expo, connecting with forward-thinking leaders and exploring the latest advancements in sustainability and technology. 🌿💡

The conference showcased impressive innovations in the realm of biodiversity and conservation, with key highlights including:

- AI-driven whale conservation through satellite tracking for creating “whale highways.”
- Future proofing vegetation restoration with the aid of drones and climate-adaptive planting, and
- Gene editing to revive extinct species and combat pest threats to native wildlife.

Implications and use cases for Artificial intelligence was a central theme, with its capacity to analyze vast data sets and autonomously address global challenges, emphasizing the need for authenticity in an increasingly digital landscape.

The Annual Threatened Species Bake Off is done and The Annual Threatened Species Bake Off is done and dusted for another year! 🍰

This year’s Bake Off theme is ‘towards zero extinctions’. With this in mind, our baking aimed to highlight the threatened species that are at greatest risk of extinction. These ranged from the Maugean Skate, with perhaps less than 1,500 left in their only known location of Macquarie Harbour due to intensive salmon industries, to the Cauliflower Soft Coral, and the Eltham Copper Butterfly with its idiosyncratic relationship with ants and plants. The winner was none other than an appropriately orange flavoured Orange-bellied Parrot cake, with accompanying flock of Orange-bellied Parrot cookies around their preferred tree hollow of Eucalyptus nitida. An incredible display by @jadesmith99, securing nearly full marks and this year’s title of Threatened Species Bakeoff Champ 2024!!!
Special mention to @lukeyjeffery for most abstract, and notable mentions to - the beautifully patterned Maugean Skate of @maxdebeer, and suitably difficult to serve Kangaroo Island Echidna. And finally a thanks to @oliviagobran for organising, along with a new scoring app, and hand made tote bag for the winner! #TSBakeOff2024 #lodgeenvironmental #saveourspecies #bakeoff #threatenedspecies
Supporting Local Conservation with @1percentftp 🌿🌍

We’re pleased to continue our commitment to the environment by donating 1% of our revenue to the @greateasternranges (GER) initiative for 2024. GER has been making a real difference on the ground with impactful projects like the Illawarra-Shoalhaven Partnership, where GER is working with local communities, traditional owners, and organisations to restore critical habitats like Frazer’s Creek.

These efforts reconnect natural corridors, support wildlife, and foster appreciation for our region’s unique ecosystems. Knowing that our contributions make a tangible difference right here in our own backyard is what drives us to stay committed.

A huge thank you to the GER team for their ongoing dedication to conservation and for keeping us connected to the outcomes of our support.

Thanks @ace_ewildlife and Andrew for another tour of Nuggan, to again see how rich in biodiversity our country can be when we treat it well. We had @ace_ewildlife picking up Small Eyed Snakes, bait balls off the shore, a hunting goshawk on arrival, glider trees dripping with sap, orchids galore, and hundreds of newly planted saplings fresh in the ground. An inspiring day with inspiring people. Keen to see this story continue 💚🤠
